That Furry Ball of Love

Most of us have that special bundle of unconditional love in our lives. Our pets become important members of our families and they occupy a special place in our hearts. They give us the purest expression of unconditional love. They become our companions and our guardians.

The story of my dog Lilo and how she came into my life is probably very similar to many of the stories of the pets in your lives. Lilo came into my life when she was only a puppy through my daughter. She received the dog as a gift and she could not keep her as she was not allowed to have pets in her apartment. She sent her over to me and in a matter of days, Lilo took over my house and my heart. She came into my life at a time when I was juggling addiction recovery, codependency, therapy and trauma recovery. I had my hands full but Lilo helped me to soften and open my heart. I can honestly say that she rescued me from my feelings of loneliness, failure and inadequacy. No matter how may day was going, I would get home and find her waiting for me by the door and she would receive me with joy and a wagging tail. That became the highlight of my day.

We have shared so many chapters in the book of our life together. We have visited so many parks, beaches, public places, visits with family members, trips and going for long walks. Through all of that, I have been able to experience a companion that is simply happy to be around me. What a wonderful gift!

Some of you can relate to my story with Lilo. Having a pet in our lives comes with many responsibilities that we happily assume because we get so much more from them. They give unconditional love and are always ready to be by our side. We get to experience the kind of love that does not expect anything in return. As humans, we can learn from our pets if we take time to share our simple lives with them with an open heart.

Do you have a furry member in your family? What is your story?
